A passionate advocate for safety and empowerment, Sylvia is CEO of the national Ask for Angela organisation, a widely recognised scheme that enables people to discreetly seek help in businesses if they feel unsafe. She has led the evolution of the campaign to ensure venues are supported with consistent implementation, better support for frontline staff and a unified national approach. She works with local and national government, police forces, BIDs and other local partners to promote the hugely positive role that well managed pubs, bars, restaurants and other socialising spaces play in creating a safer, welcoming place to spend time and have fun.
In recognition of her expertise and contribution to the sector, Sylvia was recently appointed to the Government’s Licensing Taskforce, where she helped to review the licensing process to reduce barriers to business growth, and is currently working alongside the London Mayor to support his new licensing powers to help unlock hospitality growth in the capital.
Sylvia has worked in the hospitality and leisure sector for more than 30 years. She believes deeply in the power of partnership working and places a strong emphasis on collaboration, ESG values and delivering positive social impact through the hospitality and leisure industries.
In addition to setting up the national Ask for Angela organisation, Sylvia also runs the Best Bar None scheme, the UK's gold standard in responsible operating of licensed premises. The scheme operates in over 80 towns and cities across the UK, with over 5,000 premises currently accredited.
